Working Together

Regardless of what kind of one-on-one work you choose, here are the general steps we'll take together when you hire me:

"Get Rolling" Personalized Consultation: You've probably already read about this. It's our first face-to-face meeting, where you'll show me around your space, tell me about where you are, and what you're hoping to accomplish. We'll dig into a small project to help build your motivation, and so we can see what it's like to work together.  At the end of this session I'll provide you with a personalized step-by-step guide for beginning to regain control of your environment, and we'll talk about time and cost estimates to continue working with me. This takes about 90 minutes.

"Get Dirty" Hands-On Course Work: It's time to really dive into those piles you've been neglecting! During these 4 to 6 hour sessions, we'll get hands-on with decluttering lessons from your personalized curriculum. One of the simplest but most valuable services I provide in these sessions is taking all of your discarded items out of your house: to the recycling bin, the consignment shop, or the thrift store!

"Get Real" Analysis & Prioritization: You'll notice that a lot of forgotten projects and dreams rise to the top as you dig into your stuff. With my coaching, you'll be able to start narrowing in on how you want to spend your time and energy. I'll be there to help you decide what you want to bring to life and what you want to let go of. You'll feel so relieved and satisfied when you see how much more focus you gain.

"Get It Together" Systems & Structures: Once you've pared down your belongings and prioritized your projects, it's time to make a plan for maintaining it all! This involves making efficient choices about storage, as well as focusing on your day-to-day responsibilities, like how to manage your to-do list, keep track of your spending, and stay on top of chores.

"Get Up and Go" Course Completion: You did it! At the end of our time together, your lessons and notes will have become a fantastic, customized resource to reference any time you need a little reminder of what to do. I'll follow up with you a few weeks after we stop working together to find out what's been working for you and what hasn't. I also offer maintenance plans and check-in appointments; some people like the help with accountability or with getting "reset" once in a while.

How I'm Different

Chances are, no one taught you how to be organized. You probably think of it as a character trait; something someone either is or isn't... and you AREN'T. But like learning to drive or sew or speak a language, organizing is a skill! You can learn how to do it, get better at it over time, and apply it to situations for the rest of your life. When we work together, you'll be following a customized curriculum I've developed to address your unique challenges and consider your personality and individual needs.

While we're tidying your space together, I'll be providing you with practical lessons and strategies that will help you know how to get through challenging times, make decisions quickly and wisely, and focus on what's important. Once we've gotten through your curriculum, you'll have a personalized folder of guides that you can reference any time. I've made a few of these materials available to you here on my site; take a look!

It's important that you understand this will be a hands-on process for both of us, and you'll need to be sure you're ready to buckle down and practice the skills you learn on a daily basis. I'll be there to support you along the way, checking in with you and keeping you accountable, but you will have the most success if you can find even 15 or 30 minutes a day to practice on your own. (We'll cover habit-building, too, if that's a challenge for you!)

FAQ

How long does the course take from start to finish? ▾
The amount of time it will take you to conquer your disorganization depends on a few factors. The big four are: how much stuff you have, how large your space is, how quickly you work, and how intensely we work together. I know you're looking for an actual number though, aren't you? I've worked with speedy clients who live in studio apartments and only need two sessions, while families in large homes often take between 3 and 6 months to complete the curriculum. The best way to find out what you're facing is to get an estimate from me during a "Get Rolling" personalized consultation. Book one online today!

How long are the hands-on sessions? ▾
I've found that hands-on sessions are most effective when they're between four and six hours. I'm happy to go longer if our schedules accommodate it, but anything less than four hours seems to be counterproductive. We really need a good chunk of time to dig in!

Let's get real: what's this going to cost? ▾
My 90-minute personalized consultation is $120, payable online today! And if you decide to continue working with me on the day we meet, I'll apply that payment to your package cost, making your consultation totally complimentary! Pricing can be pretty variable from that point out, and packages are customized to your schedule and budget, but in general, my rate comes out to around $45-$65 an hour.

Can you organize my home for me while I'm out of town/at work/recovering from illness? OR Will you pick up my dry cleaning/balance my checkbook/make some phone calls for me? ▾
I'm afraid not! I offer guided organization that requires working together, and will teach you how to create and maintain organized spaces and systems, so you can keep things on track once we're done. We'll probably do a little bit of cleaning as we clear off dusty spaces, but I don't do major housecleaning or personal assistant tasks. I'm happy to work with you to find someone who will, though!

How much time will I need to dedicate to organizing work outside of our sessions together? ▾
This depends on how frequently we're meeting, and whether our sessions are in-person or virtual. In general, you'll have the greatest success if we meet every one to two weeks, and on non-meeting days, you spend between 15 and 30 minutes practicing what we've covered. Just like learning to play piano or cook, the more you can fit in practice, the better your results will be!

Will I need to spend a lot of money on fancy closet systems or executive filing cabinets? ▾
Nope, although you'll have some opportunities to, if you really want to reward yourself with some shopping! In general, we'll be working on getting rid of things you have, rather than acquiring more. And when it comes to little odds and ends (like postage stamps, picture hanging supplies, or superglue), I'll have a toolkit on hand that you can dig into any time!

What's this I keep reading about virtual sessions? ▾
I love working hands-on with people, right in their homes! But sometimes a client's schedule or budget doesn't allow for long face-to-face sessions together, or they work outside of my travel area. In that case, I offer video chat sessions (via FaceTime, Google Hangouts, Skype, or Facebook video calls) that can replace hands-on time together. I also offer check-in phone calls and text/MMS "bookending" sessions, where we touch base at the beginning of a block of time to discuss what you're going to work on, and then check in at the end of the block of time to see how it went.

Do you work in XYZ geographical area? ▾
Here's a map of the area I travel within for on-site work. If you live inside this region, feel free to go ahead and book a consultation now! If you live outside this region and still want to work with me in your home, I charge 50% of my hourly rate for any travel time beyond my service area.

Do you ever have clients you can't help? ▾
I have yet to encounter a client I can't help; try me! I like a challenge. If we meet for a consultation and I think you're not ready for one-on-one work, I'll make recommendations for what might help you. I will freely admit that I am not a psychologist; if you or a loved one is suffering from Compulsive Hoarding Disorder, I would recommend working with a medical professional before or in coordination with a professional organizer.
